Could these be the final days of the Oslo Accords? - Abbas is rumored to be considering putting an end to Oslo in his UN speech later this month. If he does, will Israel reoccupy Palestinian cities? Will he also dissolve the Palestinian Authority? Or will nothing change — as usual. - Talal Jabari

Mark September 27th in your calendars. It could be a big day in the West Bank. And in typical Mideast fashion, it could be a day of celebration and it just as easily could be the day the tanks roll back into the streets of Hebron, Jenin and Ramallah.

Where is this coming from? On the morning of September 26th, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to make a speech in which it is rumored he will declare all accords with Israel null and void, and declare Palestine to be an independent state. >>>

Freitagsproteste in der Westbank am 11. September 2015

The intifada of Jerusalem? - Michel Warschawski - The strategy of Teddy Kollek, the infamous mayor of Jerusalem following Israel's 1967 occupation and subsequent annexation of Jerusalem, was grounded on three principles: separation between the communities in order to reduce friction to a minimum; colonisation on the city's outskirts, in order to create a human wall between the West Bank and Israel; and maintenance of the character of the al Aqsa mosque compound and its management by Jordan.

This strategy proved itself: there were 250,000 new settlers in a real urban belt around occupied East Jerusalem and an international (and widely misused) image was cultivated – Jerusalem as a city of coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. While the privileges enjoyed by Palestinians in Jerusalem (residency cards allowing them to travel and work on Israeli territory, as well as access Israeli social security) explain the relative calm in the city in recent decades. When revolts did take place, they remained in response to a provocation by Israeli authorities, whether intentional or not, including against the tunnel under al Aqsa, Prime Minister Sharon's 2000 visit to the al Aqsa compound or “prayers” organised by small groups of the extreme right in the area.

The extreme right coming to power changes this game: colonisation is now in the heart of Palestinian neighbourhoods (including Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah and the Muslim Quarter of the Old City), Israel systematically destroys homes built without the nearly impossible to obtain prior permission, administrative decrees are issued that push the Palestinian population out of its city (impossibility of family reunification and acquisition of Jerusalem residency). To this we must add the increasingly violent police behaviour against Palestinians, especially young people, and daily attacks by settlers, including even murder (one year ago, the young Mohammad Abu Khdeir was burnt alive by three Israelis). In other words: life becomes untenable for many Palestinian residents of the city, and tension continues to grow. >>>

UN envoy warns that Israeli-Palestinian clashes threaten to ignite violence beyond Jerusalem - Edith M. Lederer -  "Israeli actions could trigger religious confrontation over the holy sites, adding that this would be the dream of the Islamic State extremist group and would have "ramifications that will affect all corners of the Middle East and beyond."" >>>

Israeli police could use live sniper fire against Palestinian rock throwers under Benjamin Netanyahu plan . - The Prime Minister has asked the Attorney General to allow Israeli police to fire at rock throwers - Caroline Mortimer - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appealed to the country’s attorney general to allow police to use sniper fire against Palestinian stone throwers.

In an emergency meeting with leading defence figures, Mr Netanyahu laid out plans to ask Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein to allow Israeli police to use sniper rifles on protesting Palestinians throwing rocks.

The Israeli Defence Force is currently permitted to use the rifles to scare off rock throwers when they believe the lives of commanders in the field are in danger and the weapons usually fired at the perpetrators’ legs, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz. >>>

Putting Gaza in ‘Formaldehyde’: Israel’s ‘Disengagement,’ A Decade Later

•In the summer of 2005, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon withdrew Israel's army and approximately 8,000 Jewish settlers from the interior of the occupied Gaza Strip after concluding that maintaining Israel's settlement enterprise there wasn't worth the cost.

•Although Israel removed its soldiers and settlers from the interior of Gaza, the territory remains under Israeli military occupation according to international law, as Israel controls virtually all entry and exit, as well as Gaza’s airspace and coastline. Israel's continued status as the occupying power in Gaza has been affirmed by the United Nations, the U.S. State Department, as well as human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. (See fact sheet here for more)

•While portraying his plan, known as the Gaza "disengagement," as a bold move for peace, in reality Sharon intended for it to alleviate international pressure on Israel to negotiate a two-state solution with the Palestinians, allowing for the continued colonization of occupied Palestinian East Jerusalem and the West Bank. As senior Sharon advisor Dov Weisglass explained >>>

Vittorio Fera free: ‘People need to open their blind eye!’ - Vittorio Fera was arrested on 28th August 2015 at a peaceful demonstration in Nabi Saleh in occupied Palestine. He was beaten up several times by Israeli soldiers during and after his arrest and they only handed him over to the Israeli police after repeated requests by his lawyer to do so.

Israeli soldiers accused him of attacking them and throwing stones – claims completely unfounded, as he was documenting the violent arrest of Mohammed Tamimi. The decision on the case was postponed till Monday the 31st of August, where the court released him on a 3.000 shekel bill after 3 days in prison, and the condition to have yet another court on Tuesday the 8th September. Finally, the court took the decision to cancel this court date and relinquish the case. >>>
