Palestinian children in the crosshairs - Saeed Amireh - On the 12th of February this year Mamdouh Mahyoub Srour, 17-years old was shot in the neck by Israeli soldiers during a demonstration. The iron clad tear gas canister that hit his neck caused a skull fracture, leading to a brain hemorrhage.

It took two hours of surgery and almost a week in intensive care before Mamduh's condition was stable. Now back in his home in Ni'lin he is still fatigued, stressed and prefers to be alone according to a report from Defense for Children International Palestine (DCIP).

Ayed Abu Eqtaish, Accountability Program Director at DCIP says that “Israeli soldiers who aim crowd control weapons at children’s heads and upper bodies at close range must be held accountable for their actions.”

Ni'lin still bears the painful memories of the death of 10-year old Ahmad Mousa at the hands of Israeli soldiers in 2008. The memories are all the more painful since the soldier who fired the bullet was freed by Israeli courts.

Since October last year DCIP have documented eight cases were Palestinian children have sustained injuries to the head and neck from crowd control weapons fired by Israeli soldiers. Of these children two have now lost sight in one of their eyes. Seven children have been shot with live ammunition during the same period and according to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Human Affairs (OCHA) at least 2.177 children in the West Bank was injured between October 2015 and January 2016. >>>

Braving threats, Palestinians in Israel revive boycott - Yara Hawari - How can you boycott Israel when you live there? - For a number of years, Palestinian citizens of Israel have been grappling with this question. In 2012, guidelines were published on how to support the growing boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement in support of Palestinian rights. But Israel’s repression, including attempts to criminalize BDS activities, prevented it from making a significant impact.

In late February, the first such conference about how the 1.6 million Palestinian citizens of Israel can take part in the BDS movement was held in Nazareth. “Palestinian citizens of Israel have an important role in the BDS movement but we haven’t figured out what exactly that role is yet,” said Raya Naamneh, one of the event’s organizers. “So we are hoping to open up the discussion.”

Shunning Israeli goods or companies entirely is impossible for many Palestinian citizens of the country. Often there are no alternatives available to buying Israeli groceries or to taking jobs with Israeli employers. To compensate for being unable to take part fully in an economic boycott, it was suggested that Palestinians in Israel could instead focus on advancing the academic and cultural boycott of Israel.

Discrimination
- Raja Zaatry, a founding member of the BDS 48 Committee, recommended, for example, that Palestinians undertake a campaign against Ariel University. An Israeli institution in the occupied West Bank, it tries to present a false picture of itself. By highlighting how a few hundred Palestinians study there, the university tries to distract from its involvement in a colonization process that denies Palestinians their basic rights. >>>

Boycotting Israel is a free speech right - The Electronic Intifada - The global movement supporting the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, justice and equality has taken impressive steps into the political mainstream in recent years.

Efforts by the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement to hold Israel accountable for its serious violations of international law and to end international complicity in these violations are more widely supported and impactful than ever before.

Israel’s current government, its most racist ever, has dropped all pretenses of “enlightenment” and “democracy.”

This has helped to expose Israel’s regime of occupation, settler colonialism and apartheid to world public opinion like never before. In this context, and given the fast spread of BDS in recent years, Israel has tried hard but failed to slow down its gradually intensifying international isolation in the academic, cultural, sports and, to a lesser extent, economic spheres.

As a result, Israel, its lobby groups and its right-wing supporters have launched an unprecedented, well-funded global campaign to silence Palestinian narratives and criminalize BDS advocacy, especially in Western countries. >>>

Sweden denies Israeli claim that it opposes BDS - Ali Abunimah - Sweden is denying claims that Foreign Minister Margot Wallström has promised to publicly denounce the Palestinian-led boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement.

Wallström met with Tzipi Livni, the war crimes fugitive and former Israeli foreign minister, who was in Stockholm last week. At the end of the meeting, according to Israel’s Ynet, Wallström “finally agreed to publicly support Israel’s right to protect itself and oppose BDS.”

Similarly, Israel’s i24 News reported that “Wallström agreed to publicly express support for Israel’s right to defend itself and Sweden’s opposition to boycotts against Israel.” But the Swedish foreign ministry is contesting these characterizations of what it called a “private conversation.” “Sweden stands by a two-state solution,” the foreign minister’s spokesperson wrote in an email to The Electronic Intifada on Wednesday, in response to an inquiry about the accuracy of the Israeli media reports.

“As regards BDS, it is a civil society movement. Governments should not interfere in civil society organization views,” the spokesperson added. >>>

The unravelling illusion of Palestinian autonomy - Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man - Palestinians have been told for decades that limited autonomy in the West Bank is just a stop along the road to sovereignty. But more than 20 years after Oslo failed to bring usher in independence, the illusion is unraveling — and fast.

Palestinian Authority police (right) together with Israeli border police (left) control Palestinian access to Jerusalem, at the Bethlehem checkpoint on the last Friday of Ramadan, August 17, 2012. This Ramadan, Israeli authorities only allowed males under 12 or over 40 access without a special permit; females of all ages were allowed to pass freely.

The key to the arrangement that keeps Israel’s occupation of Palestinian feasible is the illusion of autonomy. Palestinians have their own government, their own security agencies and forces, consumer service providers, schools, and yes, autonomous areas. But make no mistake, they are all illusions.

And every once in a while the benevolent occupiers push things a little too far. They decide to stop playing along with their own illusion, convincing themselves that the Palestinians, and the Palestinian Authority, are so invested in the comfort and stability they provide that they wouldn’t dare withdraw consent.

The thing with a bad illusion is that the audience needs to consent — it needs to practice some sort of willful suspension of disbelief. Sometimes that collaboration is based on explicit or implicit agreements; sometimes it is symbiosis. But when you rely on the audience for the stability of your rather precarious act, the charade is constantly at risk of collapsing.  >>>
