It has taken me a long time to gather the strength to write about a period of my life that has reshaped me completely: the night I lost 14 members of my family.

It was a night I had barely escaped myself. I had been transported to safety in far away Australia not two weeks before. The evening of 17 July 2014 was to be my last in Gaza. I was due to be evacuated to Jordan and then Australia, to which I had a visa. It would be the last I would spend with my beloved family.

The night before, the eighth night of Israel’s “Protective Edge” military assault on Gaza, we — along with 1.8 million other Palestinians besieged on a strip of land of 365 square kilometers — weren’t able to sleep. Tanks shelled civilian houses seemingly at random, drones filled the skies and the cries of ambulance sirens penetrated every home. In each dwelling, people hunkered down, waiting as death threatened to take us, one by one.

It was one of the last nights of the holy month of Ramadan. My brother Ahmad’s five children huddled up tightly next to each other, cramped into one small bed trying to find at least an illusion of some secure space. >>>

‘Arabs’ saved us, says settler boy whose father was slain - Kate - Just a few years ago, Islam al-Bayed spent seven months in an Israeli prison for allegedly throwing stones at Israeli troops. Now, the 26-year-old Palestinian man has become an unlikely symbol of tolerance after rescuing an Israeli family whose car crashed following a deadly roadside shooting by Palestinian militants in the West Bank. Last week’s shooting, along with the fatal stabbing of an Israeli girl as she slept in her bed, have ratcheted up tensions in the southern West Bank. Israel has responded by imposing a closure around the city of Hebron and beefed up its troop presence in the volatile area. But al-Bayed, a private security guard who lives in the al-Fawwar refugee camp near Hebron, says his actions last Friday transcended politics. “This was a very human moment. I didn’t think of the occupation or the conflict. I thought only of human beings, children who needed my help,” >>>

Bennett: Israel Must Kidnap Palestinians to Pressure for the Release of Israeli Soldiers’ Bodies - Israeli Education Minister, Naftali Bennett, advocated on Thursday for Israel to kidnap Palestinians to be used as leverage to obtain the release of captured Israelis and the bodies of two soldiers held in the besieged Gaza Strip, Ma’an reported Israeli media as saying.

In an interview with Radio Darom, Bennett, who leads the far-right Jewish Home party, discussed the issue of releasing Palestinian prisoners as part of a deal to obtain the return of Israeli citizens, Avraham Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, as well as the bodies of Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul, two soldiers killed during Israel’s 2014 offensive on Gaza. >>>

What does justice look like for victims of Jewish terrorism? - Edo Konrad - A reminder that the victims of Jewish and Palestinian violence never encounter the same system of justice.

On Thursday Israel’s High Court of Justice rejected a petition to stop the demolition of a home to a Palestinian man accused of aiding three Palestinians in a shooting attack that killed Border Police officer Hadar Cohen in February.

The appeal was filed by the father of Bilal Ahmed Abu Zeid, the Palestinian who is accused of providing weapons and transportation to the three men in the attack. In his appeal, Abu Zeid’s father claims that the demolition of homes is an illegal act according to international law, and argued that the demolition cannot be approved until his son is proven guilty. According to the father, the demolition would leave his youngest children without a home. >>>

Telling the stories of Gaza's 'obliterated families' - Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man - A new project uses heartbreaking photos, text and video to tell the stories of the Palestinian families who lost more than three members in the 2014 Gaza war, the stories of their lives, their deaths and the survival of those left behind.

There is no shortage of numbers and statistics that are cited in telling, reporting on and remembering periods of war and violence. Often times certain wars come to be represented by numbers. The number of killed, wounded displaced. The number of homes damaged or destroyed. The number of days that the bombs fell, the number of days since they stopped.

It goes without saying that people are not numbers. One innovative and touching writing project in the Gaza Strip, We Are Not Numbers, aims to take those numbers, the way that so much of the world views  >>>

Israel’s anti-Facebook Spin Is Latest Excuse to Ignore the Occupation - Asher Schechter - "Censoring content on Facebook is unlikely to prevent terrorist attacks, since Facebook did not invent the anger and hate that lead to them — all it is, really, is a quicker method of distributing hatred. Moreover, censoring it in some way could impede the war on terror, since law enforcement agencies use it frequently for intelligence gathering." >>>

Ramadan 2016: Harassment, collective punishment and settlement expansions in the occupied West Bank - International Solidarity Movement - "Netanyahu’s actions continue to escalate the situation in the West Bank and completely disregard the recently released Quartet report, which has resulted in the U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon condemning Israel for this continued expansion of illegal settlements." >>>

Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Arab Peace Initiative - Henry Siegman -  Whatever incitement the Palestinian Authority may be guilty of, it pales into insignificance when compared to the incitement that is Israel’s half-century long occupation.>>>

Netanyahu’s bloody incitement - Yakov Hirsch - Let’s agree on the facts. One Palestinian male got into a West Bank settlement and killed a 13-year-old Israeli girl in her room with a knife. Nothing more, nothing less. Before her body was cold, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rushed the same day to make a video for the English speaking world.

What is the purpose of this Netanyahu video? What more does the world need to know about this terrible event? Why is he showing us her gruesome bloodstained room? Why are we hearing about her teddy bear? Is Israel under siege by child killers– so this is a call for Interpol or FBI help? No that’s not whats happening here.

Netanyahu is “interpreting” one isolated event for the world, talking about one Palestinian killing one girl, and deriving a political lesson. Let’s see what he has to say.

This morning a terrorist sneaked into the bedroom of a 13-year-old girl, Hallel-Yaffa Ariel. He murdered young Hallel in cold blood. A picture of her blood stained room is almost too hard to see. There’s a teddy bear still on her bed, a red beanbag chair, some pictures on the wall, shoes tightly packed in a bin next to her bunk bed.

Why would any person do this? You don’t murder a sleeping child for peace. You don’t slit a little girl’s throat to protest a policy you don’t like. You do this because you’ve been brainwashed. You’ve been brainwashed by a warped ideology that teaches you that this child isn’t human.

Let me offer an alternative theory that doesn’t need much brainwashing. How about hate? How about revenge? I know that Israelis would like to tell the world that Palestinians should feel privileged to be occupied by Jews but– they don’t feel that way.

Revenge for what you ask? How how about we look at the last murderous Palestinian attack in Tel Aviv. These men lived in occupied territory and one had seen his house blown up by Israeli forces when he was a child. It is not a mystery to those not “blinded by their passions” what Palestinians have to avenge. >>>
